Flooded Carpet? Why a Dehumidifier Won't Save Your Floor And What Will.

You wake up to a burst pipe, a leaking washing machine, or rain blowing in through an open window.

Your expensive lounge carpet is completely soaked!

Panic sets in, so you throw down some old towels, plug in a home dehumidifier, and cross your fingers hoping it will dry out.

The Truth Bomb - Dehumidifiers Are Not Enough.

Here is the hard truth, running a standard dehumidifier in the room won't suffice because the moisture doesn't just sit on top of the carpet.

It sinks straight through the fiber's and gets trapped deep below in the foam underlay and the concrete or wooden subfloor.

Your carpet was simply not meant to get wet. The fabric, the latex adhesive backing, and the foam underlay were manufactured and installed with the strict assumption that they would stay dry.

The Science of Flood Damage.

When water sits in your carpet for more than 24 to 48 hours, the latex backing that holds the carpet together begins to break down, leading to bubbling and delamination.

Worse, in our humid Auckland climate, that trapped moisture creates the perfect breeding ground for mould, mildew, and persistent musty odours.

Once that foam underlay starts to smell, it becomes a much bigger and more expensive problem.

You cannot clean rotting underlay once the mould sets in, it becomes a biohazard that permanently contaminates the floorboards below.

The Repair Specialist Solution - Replacing and Re laying.

This is exactly where my professional carpet repair services come in. If a flood was left unnoticed, the underlay is already ruined, surface cleaning will not fix the musty smell or the damage.

To save your expensive top carpet, I will come in and carefully pull back the affected areas, I will cut out and dispose of the saturated, damaged foam underlay and ensure the subfloor is properly aired out.

Once the foundation is safe, I install brand new matching underlay, I use professional heavy duty tools to power stretch your original carpet back onto the smooth edge, ensuring a flat, flawless finish without any wrinkles or trip hazards.

How to Prevent Underlay Rot in the First Place.

What if you catch the leak immediately? If you act quickly, before the carpet starts to smell you can actually save both the carpet and the underlay through extreme suction.

For emergency water extraction, I always recommend the rapid response team at Klever Carpet Cleaning (https://klever.co.nz).

Their bright pink vans are equipped with petrol powered, truck-mounted extraction machines that suck the excess moisture straight out of both the carpet fiber's and the underlay.

They place specialised drying fans under the carpet and apply powerful anti microbial agents to stop smelly mould from forming and prevent water damage (yellowing).

The Final Word.

If you have a fresh flood, don't rely on a towel call Klever’s heavy duty extractors immediately to save your floors. If the damage is already done, your carpet is smelling musty, give me a call to replace the rotting underlay and flawlessly re lay your carpet to its original glory.
